The Safety Case for Fire Retardant Coatings

slower flame spread when framing is treated with a fire retardant

Untreated framing, sheathing, and OSB let flames race through a structure — raising losses, delaying approvals, and increasing liability. Anabec’s AFFR gives contractors a simple way to slow ignition and flame spread, protect crews and occupants, and keep inspections moving.

  • Safety & liability – Faster flame spread increases risk to workers, occupants, and your reputation.
  • Project delays – Lacking documented fire protection triggers red tags and rework.
  • Material vulnerability – Wood-based components ignite and propagate fire without a protective coating.

Common Problem Indicators

Visual Indicators

Uncoated framing lumber, exposed roof/floor sheathing, or untreated wall cavities before close-in.

Environmental Measurements

High-occupancy or sensitive occupancies (multifamily, schools, healthcare) where documented fire protection is expected.

Structural Warning Signs

Inspection failures tied to missing fire-retardant treatment on wood components.

Our Professional-Grade System

Our single-product solution provides contractors with reliable, code-aligned fire protection for wood-based building materials.

Anabec Flame & Fire Retardant (AFFR)

Water-based, ready-to-use coating for new construction. Delivers Class 1/Class A surface burning characteristics under ASTM E84 (flame spread index 15). Active ingredients (borate + ammonium polyphosphates) slow burn rate and smoke development. FBC System Compatible and Spears-approved for CPVC. Coverage: 300–500 sq ft/gal (5-gal pail). 12-month shelf life. Apply before mechanicals; cover sprinkler heads during application. When paired with NewBuild 50, apply AFFR first.

Why Contractors Choose Anabec for Fire Protection

  • Pass inspections the first time – AFFR provides Class A (ASTM E84) surface-burning characteristics on new, unfinished framing.
  • Protects wood and the schedule – Slows flame spread and smoke development so projects meet specification without last-minute rework.
  • Plays nice with the build – Water-based, applied like paint; FBC System Compatible and approved by Spears for CPVC compatibility.
  • Multi-benefit coating – Fire resistance plus added resistance to insects and rodents for framing longevity.
  • Clear application rules – Apply before mechanicals and cover sprinklers during spray; 300–500 sq ft/gal coverage on new dimensional lumber.
